Description
Whitfield Court is a house with a core dating back to the 16th century, substantially remodelled in the 18th century and extended in the late 19th century. It has a timber-frame structure, now clad in brick, with plain tiled roofs and ridge and rear stacks. The original house comprises three framed bays, with a lobby entrance, and a rear service range and staircase addition create an L-shaped plan.
The two-storey façade features dentilled eaves and sash windows to the street frontage, with four windows on the first floor, each beneath a gabled hood supported by brackets. A wooden doorcase with panelled pilasters, a flat hood on console brackets, and a six-panel door with transom light are located to the left of the centre. Gable ends have large central windows on each floor, flanked by smaller, narrower windows, now blocked, all set under gauged brick arches with arched brick lunettes in the gables. A round-arched sash window with glazing bars is found in the staircase extension at the rear, while the service range has casement windows.
Inside, there is a panelled room with an enriched 18th-century chimney piece in the east ground floor room. The timber construction is visible, with exposed Queen post trusses at the west end. A dog-leg staircase features an open string, twisted balusters, and a swept handrail.
