Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade II* listed building located in Bisley, dating back to the 13th century, with a 14th-century porch. The early 19th-century chancel and north aisle were added in 1873. The church features carstone walls with sandstone block dressings for the aisle, a stock brick chancel, and brick extensions, along with a timber-framed porch. It has plain tiled roofs, a weatherboard belfry, and a wood-shingled broach spire at the west end. The nave includes a pent roof aisle to the north and a chancel to the east, which has a vestry and extensions to the south, as well as a bellcote and porch at the west end. The west end is supported by buttresses, and it has stone-dressed windows, including a three-light window to the south, one from the 14th century and one from the 19th century, along with lancet windows at the east end. The entrance features an arched planked door in a stone surround with dogtooth decoration and a hood mould with end stops. The timber-framed porch is open above panelled dado walls, with moulded mullions above.

Inside, the church has a simple whitewashed interior with a two-bay north aisle supported by round piers and chamfered arches. The timber frame of the belfry is visible at the west end, with moulded beams connecting to the walls.

Notable fittings include a wood-panelled pulpit and a sandstone font with an octagonal bowl, featuring panelled decorations alternating between roundels and Celtic crosses, set on an octagonal stem with a plinth below.
