Description
No. 5 High Street is a shop that likely dates back to the early 17th century, with extensions from the 18th century and alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with brick cladding that has been rendered. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has three bays facing High Street, with the front part being two and a half bays deep and a two-bay 17th-century cross-wing at the rear.
The High Street elevation is rendered and includes a late 20th-century shop front, three 20th-century 12-pane sash windows above, a cornice, and a parapet. Inside, the front section has one queen-post roof truss and a tie-beam that has been broken through. The rear part is particularly interesting, featuring square-panelled timber framing with tension braces, two 2-light mullion windows with moulded frames and stanchions on the east wall, lambs-tongue stops on the chamfered cross-beam, and a queen-post roof truss with clasped purlins and straight wind braces.
