Description
The Old Town Hall, built around 1728, is a two-storey building located on High Street in Reigate. It features four windows on the north and south sides, and two on the east and west. The west front is curved, constructed of red brick with grey headers. The building is supported by an open arcade consisting of four round-headed arches on the north and south sides, two similar arches on the east, and three on the west. Several of these arches have been filled in, including the westernmost arch of the south front and all but the easternmost arch of the north front. Above the arcade is a brick stringcourse.
The first-floor windows have segmental heads and retain their glazing bars. A brick modillion cornice and a parapet are present, and brick chimneys were added at the corners in 1853, which have affected the building's proportions. The roof is flat, and in 1811, a slate lantern from the adjacent Clock Tower, which was demolished, was placed in the center of the roof. This lantern, which does not relate to the rest of the building, narrows as it rises and is topped with four clock faces and a wooden cupola that has a lead dome containing bells, finished with a ball cap and weather-vane.
Inside the Town Hall, at the east end, there is a red K6-type telephone kiosk, designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. This cast iron kiosk, made by the Carron Company, is square in plan with a domed roof and features unperforated George VI crowns on the top panels, along with margin glazing on the windows and door. The telephone number for the kiosk is Reigate 242520.
