Description
Numbers 8 and 10 Bell Street are two houses, originally occupied separately. Number 8 is an L-shaped building dating back to the early 18th century, with a wing extending to the rear. The front facade was rebuilt in the early 19th century, with the roof ridge appearing above the parapet. It is two storeys and an attic in height, with three windows. The front is stuccoed, with a parapet and a slated roof incorporating a dormer window. There are rounded bow windows on either side, with curved upper sash windows with glazing bars and a late 19th or early 20th-century shop front below, following the curves of the bows. The original wing to the right is visible on the return, constructed of brownish-red brick in English bond, and featuring a first-floor band and a steeply-pitched tiled roof. Number 10 dates from the late 18th century and is three storeys high, with two windows. It has a stuccoed front and a hipped tiled roof with a modillion eaves cornice. The original sash windows with glazing bars remain on the second floor. The first floor contains a 19th-century small bay window and a later sash, while the ground floor has a shop front in keeping with that of Number 8. Numbers 8 to 18 (even) combine to form a cohesive group.
