Description
No. 2A on King's Head Street is a house dating from the late 17th century and late 18th century. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with a front made of red Flemish-bond brick. The roof is asymmetrical, covered with clay pantiles, and includes gables and Suffolk very boards. There is a gabled pantiled rear staircase tower and an additional extension with 20th-century concrete pantiles.
The house has two storeys and a low attic storey that is part of the roof. The front elevation has a parapet with coping that steps up to the centre. The second floor contains three horizontally proportioned attic windows with recessed double-hung sashes and small panes, all set under flat rubbed brick arches. On the first floor, there is one square double-hung sash window with square panes flanked by a central blind window, all featuring flat rubbed brick arches. The ground floor has two similar but deeper windows and a central doorcase with a moulded architrave, a reeded frieze, and a flat door hood. The door is recessed and has flush panelled flanks with two glazed lights above four flush panels, each framed with reeded designs.
Inside, the late 17th-century timber frame includes principal members that are chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. The layout consists of two equal bays and a central narrow stack/staircase bay, although the stack is now missing. The winder stair in the stair tower has heavy turned balusters, and one rear frame post features a jowl-like head with a bold cyma profile.
