Description
This is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations in the early 19th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, with a front parapet and a gabled roof covered in dark concrete tiles with Suffolk verge boards. A 20th-century dormer window is set into the roof. The house has two storeys and attic space, featuring early 19th century double-hung sash windows with small panes on each floor. A simple doorcase includes moulded pilasters, consoles, and a flat hood. The south gable is white weatherboarding, and a substantial stack is located at the north gable. A two-storey rear extension, timber-framed with a gabled roof and single flat-roofed dormer, is also present.
The internal timber frame consists of two bays of unequal size, with quadrant moulded spine beams and bridging joists. The roof structure, visible inside, has three bays with ‘A’ frames, joggled side purlins, and a single collar to each pair of principals. Originally, the front of the house was jettied, with each joist pegged to an inner bressumer. A substantial original fireplace remains, featuring a cambered mantel beam with stopped quadrant moulding. The staircase rises behind the stack, and has an elegant boarded head at the top. The framing is a mixture of pine and elm, and the house represents a well-preserved example of its period.
