Description

No. 20 Priory Road is a house dating from the early 17th century, which was refaced in the mid 18th century. Originally timber-framed, it features square framing on the right side wall. The exterior is finished in Flemish bond brick with flared headers, topped by an old tile roof and a brick stack. The house has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys high with a four-window range. Notable features include carved brackets supporting a flat hood over a six-panelled door with an overlight. The windows are mid 18th century sashes, with segmental header arches above the bottom right window and a narrow sash over the door. There are plank doors leading to a carriage entry on the left. The gabled roof has a ridge stack.

At the rear right, there is a two-storey, one-bay range that was originally timber-framed but is now constructed of Flemish bond brick and rendered, with an old tile roof and a gable end limestone rubble stack finished in brick. This section includes 19th century two- and three-light casements and a mid 18th century six-panelled door.

Inside, there is a mid 18th century panelled room in the front right, along with mid 18th century two-panelled doors and winder stairs featuring vase balusters on a closed string. The rear wing has chamfered and stopped beams and winder stairs adjacent to the rear stack. The first floor and attic were not inspected but are likely to be of interest.
