Description

The Vale and Downland Museum Centre is a house that dates back to the 17th century and was remodeled around 1780 by Lawrence Hazell, as indicated by the datestone above the first-floor window. Originally, it featured a timber-framed structure with square timber framing and wattle and daub infill on the side and rear right. The exterior is finished in Flemish bond brick with flared headers, topped by an old tile roof and a brick stack. The building has an original three-unit lobby-entry plan and stands two storeys tall with a four-window range.

A late 19th-century gabled porch, which is timber-framed with herringbone brick infill, is present, although the door has been blocked and the current entry is located in a 20th-century extension to the left. There is a two-light leaded window in the left side wall, and gauged brick flat arches adorn the late 18th-century sashes and three mid-19th-century horned sashes to the left. The roof is half-hipped with a ridge stack, and there are 20th-century extensions to the left and rear.

Inside, the room to the right features a chamfered and stopped beam, original joists, and a chamfered bressumer above a chalk open fireplace. There is also a collar-truss with clasped purlins to the right.
