Description

The remains of a market cross, dating from the late 16th century, are located inside number 19 on Church Street in Wantage. This octagonal structure is made of limestone and features a domical cap. Each of its faces has weathered figures of saints set in niches. The market cross is recognized as being of considerable local importance. Originally, it was situated to the south of the front door of St. Gabriel's House on Newbury Street, and later moved inside the Urban District Council Offices on Portway. It has now been relocated to its current position in the Vale and Downland Museum Centre.
