Description

St Michael's House is a retreat house for a sisterhood of St. Mary the Virgin, later converted into flats. It was built in 1855 by William White. The building is constructed from coursed dressed limestone rubble with flush red brick bands, limestone ashlar dressings, and has an old tile roof with brick stacks. The design is asymmetrical, incorporating an east chapel. It has two storeys to the left and two storeys with an attic to the gable ends, with a four-window range to the front.

The asymmetrical front elevation features a porch with a pyramidal roof, and a moulded pointed doorway with an alternating brick and limestone ashlar arch above. To the right is a recessed gable end. A similar left gable end is brought forward and attached at right angles to the left wing, which has a two-window range. Pointed arches, made of alternating red brick and limestone ashlar, feature above 20th-century casement windows. The roof is gabled, with lateral and ridge stacks. The rear left and right wings are in a similar style, with three-light Geometrical style wood casements.

The chapel, located to the right of the front of the building, was added in 1888 by A.B. Allin, and is constructed from matching materials. It has an apsidal east end and side walls with two-light Geometrical style windows, offset buttresses, and a three-light chamfered mullioned square-headed window on each side. A Kentish-tracery quatrefoil light is present at the rear. The chapel roof is gabled.
