Description
No. 136 High Street is a shop that was originally built as a house in the 15th century, with details added in the 18th and 19th centuries. The facade is rendered, and the building has tiled roofs with a timber-framed structure that is largely preserved at the ground and first floors. It stands two storeys high with attics and features a two-window range. The ground floor showcases exposed jetty beams of the original timber, which are encased in a shop front from around 1840 that includes an architrave surround and angle paterae at the windows. There are 19th-century brackets above and a dentillated cornice, along with 20th-century plastic shop fascia lettering. The jettied first floor has two plate glass sash windows, while the second floor is blank. The roof is half-hipped with a central gabled dormer. Inside, the ground floor contains a transverse chamfered bridging beam and closely set tenoned-in joists. The first floor features one exposed and three encased angle jowled posts, with the rest of the frame largely intact. The narrow site reflects the medieval development and burgage plots of High Street.
