Description
The Kings Head is a public house located in Bedale Market Place, dating from the early to mid 18th century. It is constructed of brick, rendered, and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has three storeys and four bays. At the base, there is a cement plinth. The second bay from the left contains a four-panel door with an overlight and side glazing bars, framed by a doorcase with pilasters, consoles, a frieze, and a cornice. This door is flanked by 19th-century canted bays that have stone cills, with central sashes featuring 4 panes and side sashes with 2 panes, all adorned with friezes and cornices. The right-hand bay includes a carriage entrance, which has a wooden surround with plinths, pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice.
On the first floor, there are 16-pane sash windows with stone cills, while the second floor features 20th-century casements, except for the second bay from the right, which is blind; all windows have stone cills. The building is topped with stone coping and has end stacks. Inside, the first floor boasts a Jacobean-style chimney piece dated 'WW 1690', which includes an architrave with two heads and a shield below the mantelshelf, flanked by pilasters topped with male heads and a large coat of arms.
