Description
This is a house of the late 16th or early 17th century, located in Harwich. It is timber-framed, with an ashlar plastered front and a brick facing on the northwest flank. The roof is gabled concrete, running at a right angle to the street, and is concealed behind a high, plain parapet. The rear and part of the flank are black weatherboarded, and there is a stack projecting through the rear roof slope.
The house is two storeys high, with an attic. The front features double-hung sash windows with margin-glazing on both floors, and a six-panel entrance door; the top two panels are glazed, the others featuring prominent moulded frames. A small, high-quality two-bay cross-wing is present, along with a contemporary attic floor. There is also an extra narrow bay at the rear, possibly for the stack.
Inside, the house retains original features including jowled posts, top plates, and bridging joists with stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. An early 19th-century panelled partition separates the stairway.
