Description
No. 9 Castle Street is an early 19th-century house located in Hereford. It is built of brick and features a hipped Welsh slate gable roof, with both a brick lateral stack and a ridge stack. The building has four storeys and a cellar, with a two-window range on the exterior. French windows are set under a verandah with a sheet metal roof, alongside 6/6 sash windows and 3/3 sash windows, all topped with gauged brick flat arches. A 20th-century coped parapet crowns the structure.
The entrance, located to the right, consists of a two-panel door with a swagged fanlight. This is framed by round-headed panelled reveals and a moulded wood flat hood supported by pilasters. On the left side, there is a tier of two-light casements beneath rendered lintels, and the eaves are adorned with brick modillions. The right side features stucco up to the cornice at the second floor level, with a tier of casements from the first floor. The rear includes two-light casements on the first floor, two 6/6 sashes, and a two-light casement in the gable, all with segmental arches.
Inside, the house has a dogleg staircase with stick balusters. On the third floor, there is a two-panel door leading to a wall cupboard, along with additional two-panel doors. The second floor features a 19th-century fireplace, 6-panel doors, and architraves around the windows. The first floor also has 6-panel doors and architraves, as well as a ceiling cornice. The ground floor boasts coved ceilings, and the cellar is primarily stone-lined.
