Description

The houses at 10 and 11 Castle Street date from the early 19th century. They are built of brick with hipped Welsh slate roofs and four brick ridge stacks arranged cross-axially. The exterior is three storeys and a basement, with a four-window front. The ground floor features French windows with louvred shutters set under gauged brick flat arches, and a cast-iron verandah with a sheet metal roof projects from the front. A stone storeyband runs horizontally across the facade. Above this are sash windows with 3/6 panes, also under gauged brick flat arches, topped by a stone coped parapet. The central entrances have paired 6-panel doors with swagged overlights, within panelled wood cases and modillioned flat hoods. The basement is ashlar and contains pairs of 2-light metal casements and half-glazed panelled doors, beneath a painted stone storeyband. Stone flags pave the area, with stone steps leading to the cellar. The rear elevation features various sash windows, including some 6/6 and 4/4 pane examples, as well as 20th-century casements. Central entrances feature a margin-glazed door and a glazed door, both with fanlights under semicircular brick arches.

The interior of No.10 has an open-well staircase with stick balusters and a swan neck rail. The attic has a 4-panel door. The first floor includes a ceiling cornice, a wall cupboard, an early 19th-century fireplace, and a 6-panel door. The ground floor has an internal fanlight, a 6-panel door, a dado rail, a panelled window riser, and an early 19th-century fireplace. The basement contains plank doors and brick barrel vault cellars beneath raised front garden areas. No.11 has an open-well staircase with stick balusters up to the third floor. The second floor has 4-panel doors, the first floor has a fireplace, 6-panel doors, and wall cupboards, and the ground floor has 4-panel and 6-panel doors. The cellar of No.11 also features brick barrel vault cellars with a part-glazed entry door.
