Description

12 and 13 Castle Street are early 19th-century houses located in Hereford. They are built of brick with an ashlar plinth and feature hipped Welsh slate gable roofs, although the roof pitch on the right side has been altered. The houses are three storeys tall, with an attic and cellar, and have a four-window range with 6/6 sash windows set under segmental arches. There is a storey band and a stone-coped parapet, along with two 20th-century box dormers that have casements and lead roofs.

The entrances are located to the left and right, each featuring a six-panel door with fanlights beneath modillioned open-pediment hoods supported by grooved pilasters. No. 13 has a 6/6 sash window, while No. 12 has an 8/8 sash window. At the rear, No. 13 has a late 19th-century timber-framed bay window with four-light casements and side lights under a pentice roof. No. 12 features a combination of 2/2, 6/6, and 2/2 sash windows above, along with a two-light casement and a 20th-century leaded casement in the gables.

Inside No. 12, there is an open well staircase with stick balusters. The second floor includes a four-panel door, 19th-century fireplaces, and wall cupboards. The first floor has a fire surround, six-panel doors, and a marble fireplace at the front. The ground floor features a six-panel door and a fireplace, while the cellar is stone-lined.

In No. 13, the staircase is dogleg with stick balusters and a swan neck rail. The attic contains two four-panel doors and a plank door to a cupboard. The second floor has a four-panel door and two six-panel doors with architraves, along with wall cupboards and a window architrave. The first floor includes a four-panel door, two six-panel doors (one with an architrave), an early 20th-century bay with a window seat, a cornice, and panelled risers to the front windows, as well as a marble fireplace. The ground floor has an inserted part-glazed four-panel door, five six-panel doors with architraves, a four-moulded-panel door, an overlight with glazing bars, and panelled risers and shutters to the front window. The cellar is also stone-lined and includes a part-glazed two-panel door, a plank door, a chamfered ceiling beam, a mantelpiece, and oak stairs.
