Description
St Ethelbert's Hospital is a group of almshouses with a foundation dating back to the 14th century, rebuilt in 1805 by Wood of Hereford. The building is constructed from ashlar sandstone and features a stone tile roof with six brick ridge stacks. It is a single-storey structure with a central two-leaf plank door set beneath a chamfered four-centred arch, which has a hood moulding and a tablet displaying an episcopal seal above it. This door is flanked by two-light lancet windows with Gothic-glazed heads and lattice leaded lights. The façade includes pilasters adorned with armorial shields and a castellated parapet. There are four similar windows on each side of the entrance. The returned side is finished in dressed sandstone.
At the rear, there is a ten-window range of two-light mullion casements with lattice leaded glazing, along with a blocked four-light stone mullion window. The central section features a four-centred arch with a reset 14th-century arch and a panel above, flanked by pilasters leading to a castellated parapet. The leaded lights and doors are situated under a pentice roof. Inside, the ground floor contains chamfered ceiling beams and wall cupboards, while the first floor has exposed purlins.
