Description
27 Castle Street is a late 18th-century house located in Hereford. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped Welsh slate roof, with brick ridge and rear stacks. The building has three storeys and a cellar, with a four-window range that includes 6/6 sash windows under gauged brick flat arches, as well as 3/6 sashes, and moulded brick eaves.
The entrance is positioned to the center left and consists of a six fielded-panel door with a plain overlight, set in panelled reveals and topped with a moulded wood open-pediment hood supported by pilasters. To the left of the entrance is one 6/6 sash window, and to the right are two 6/6 sashes. The right side of the building features returned eaves moulding and a tripartite arrangement of 2/2, 6/6, and 2/2 sashes on the ground and first floors, along with a 1/1, 3/6, and 1/1 sash, plus a small sash above.
At the rear, the house is partly rendered and includes late 19th-century 2/2 sash windows and a 20th-century metal casement on the second floor.
Inside, the house boasts an 18th-century open-well staircase with turned balusters, moulded string and rail, and a panelled dado. On the second floor, there are four 6-panel doors and one 4-panel door, along with panelled risers and window shutters, a moulded cornice and skirting, an early 19th-century cast-iron fireplace, and a wooden fire surround. The first floor features similar details, including a 19th-century marble fireplace, a ceiling rose, and a leaf-modillion cornice with a wooden fire surround. The ground floor has a panelled dado in the hall, ceiling roses and cornices, a sprigged arch, and 4- and 6-panel doors with architraves, as well as a 19th-century wooden fire surround and panelled risers and shutters to the windows with architraves. The cellar is stone-lined and includes a plank door, brick arches, a chamfered ceiling beam, and a brick floor.
