Description

The Cathedral Preparatory School, originally a house, dates from the mid 18th century and mid 19th century. It is constructed of stucco with a Welsh slate roof and features brick end stacks, including a buttress on the right and a brick stack at the rear. The building has a two-unit plan and stands three storeys high with a cellar, displaying a seven-window range with 6/6 sash windows and a storey band.

The entrance is located in the left-hand unit, featuring a six-fielded panel door and fanlight set in a round-headed moulded doorcase, topped with a moulded wood open-pediment hood supported by consoles and pilasters. To the right of the entrance is one 6/6 sash window, while the left has two. The right-hand unit includes a door with a plain overlight on the left and an 8/8 sash window on the right, with an overall storey band.

A projecting mid 19th-century wing is located at the centre right, built of painted brick with a hipped Welsh slate roof and brick modillion eaves, featuring a 6/6 sash window under a segmental arch. To the left is a small single-storey wing of painted brick from the early 19th century, which has a six-panel door and a swagged fanlight in a round-headed case.

Inside, the building features an 18th-century open-well staircase with turned balusters and a moulded string and rail, along with panelling. The second floor includes a 19th-century fireplace, six-panel doors, and a 19th-century fireplace with a 17th-century carved lintel. The first floor has 18th-century fireplaces, six-panel double doors with fluted architraves, six-panel doors, panelled risers to windows, chamfered ceiling beams, and an 18th-century corner fireplace. The ground floor hall features panelling with a carved frieze, six-panel doors, a margin-glazed door with a cambered head, a 19th-century fireplace, a wall cupboard, panelled reveals to windows, and an exposed ceiling frame. The cellar is stone-lined and includes a winder stair.
