Description

3 Castle Hill is a summerhouse and cottage dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with 19th-century additions at the rear. The building is constructed of brick and features a Welsh slate roof, with old plain tiles on the summerhouse to the right.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a three-window range. On the right side, there is an 8/8 sash window with a cambered head beneath moulded wood eaves, along with a 19th-century casement window in a protruding gabled porch-bay. To the left, there is a blocked opening and a 19th-century casement window in a moulded case, both set under segmental arches. A six-panel door, set back to the right and also under a segmental arch, leads into the building, which has two 8/8 sash windows under segmental arches. The right side has a similar 8/8 sash window above a blocked opening, while the left side shows 18th-century timber-framing beneath an altered roof pitch that extends to the rear.

The cottage was added to a 17th-century summerhouse that was originally in the garden of No.30 Castle Street and resembles the summerhouse at No.29 Castle Street.

Inside, there is a 19th-century winder staircase with stick balusters. On the first floor, there is a 19th-century fireplace, 18th-century panelling in the gazebo, five panelled doors with L-hinges, an 18th-century bolection-moulded fireplace, and a plank door. The ground floor features three panelled doors, panelled dados, a four-panel door, a corner fireplace with a stone stack base, and a 20th-century fireplace. In the cellar, there is a chamfered ceiling beam.
