Description

St Ethelbert's is a house dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, featuring earlier elements. It is constructed of brick and has a shallow pitched Welsh slate roof, with a brick ridge stack, a stepped buttress stack to the right, and a stack at the rear. The building has a central staircase plan and stands three storeys high with a five-window range. The windows include 6/6 sashes, with a slightly larger pair on the left under segmental arches, and 3/6 sashes under cambered flat arches. The eaves are adorned with brick modillion.

The central entrance features a moulded six-panel door and fanlight beneath a semicircular gauged brick arch, flanked by 6/6 sashes under segmental arches. On the left side, there is a 19th-century half-glazed door with a casement overlight that has a central glazing bar.

Inside, the house has a dogleg staircase with stick balusters, a swan neck rail, and turned newels. On the second floor, there is a two-panel door, two four-panel doors, plank doors, 19th-century fire surrounds, and architraves to the windows. The first floor includes three four-panel doors with architraves, a cornice, architraves to the windows, and a late 19th-century tiled fireplace with a slate surround. The ground floor features architraves to the windows, two six-panel doors, an exposed chamfered ceiling frame with an arched brace and passing-brace, a 19th-century fire surround, a four-panel door, and exposed box framing. The cellar is brick-lined with some cobbled floors, masonry, a chamfered ceiling beam, and a plank door.
