Description
This is a mid-18th century house located on Castle Street, Hereford. It is a substantial brick building with a hipped slate roof and brick corner stacks, with a 20th-century addition to the right-hand stack. The front facade is arranged with a four-window range, featuring early 20th-century sash windows with flat arches. A restored coped parapet tops the building, punctuated by two 20th-century dormers with sash windows. The central entrance features a moulded six-panel door with a margin-glazed overlight, set within a panelled case and topped with a moulded pediment featuring a decorated frieze and consoles. Flanking the entrance are pairs of early 20th-century sash windows with etched and embossed lower panes. A storeyband runs across the elevation.
To the left is an advanced wing with a brick stack, brick coped gable parapets, boarded eaves, and a returned storeyband. It has two plain sash windows. To the right, a returned side features a similar sash window and a blocked opening above, both under segmental arches. A late 19th-century panelled door and casement overlight are located behind a late 19th-century wall, with a moulded brick band and balustrade with stone finials.
The interior includes an open-well staircase with a moulded string and rail, barley sugar twist balusters, and two painted glass lights. The attic contains an 18th-century balustrade, though some balusters are missing. On the second floor, timber framing is visible, along with a 19th-century tiled fireplace with a marble surround. Six-panel doors, two-panel doors, and 18th-century fireplaces are also present. The front room at the first floor retains panelling with a frieze, moulded architrave, chair rail, and skirting, along with an 18th-century fire surround.
The ground floor hall features six-panel doors, bolection moulded architraves, a cornice, and ceiling roses. A shouldered arch with enriched corbels is also present. The front left room retains panelling and a door. The kitchen includes an early 20th-century dresser. A rear hall has a panelled dado, and a rear room showcases a modillioned cornice, a ceiling rose, a 19th-century marble fireplace, and panelling.
