Description

No. 2 Castle Street is a house dating from the early 19th century. It features painted brickwork and a Welsh slate roof, with a central brick ridge stack. The building has three storeys and a three-window range, with late 19th-century 6/6 sash windows set under segmental arches, accompanied by louvred shutters. Above these are 4/8 sashes. The eaves are supported by paired brackets. The central entrance consists of a half-glazed panelled door with a fanlight, framed by a plain stucco architrave. To the right of the door is one 8/8 sash window, and to the left are two more 8/8 sashes, all under segmental arches. A cast-iron verandah extends over the entrance.

To the right, there is a projecting wing added in the late 19th century, constructed of painted brick with stucco quoins and a hipped slate gable roof. This wing has a brick stack at the left rear and is three storeys high, featuring a single window range with a 2/2 sash window that has a moulded stucco architrave and a flat hood supported by enriched consoles. Above this is a similar mullion window with plain sashes. The left side of the wing has late 19th-century 2/2 sashes on the first and second floors, while the right side has two casement windows under segmental arches on the ground floor, with spurstones present. The rear of the building includes 2/2 sashes and a margin-glazed staircase window.

Inside, there is a 19th-century dogleg staircase with stick balusters leading to the second floor. On the second floor, the front room features a cast-iron fireplace from the 19th century, along with two doors with four and six panels. The first floor has four-panel doors and architraves, while the ground floor boasts a coved ceiling with roses, a wall cupboard, a four-panel door, and shutters. The cellar is stone-lined with a cobbled floor.
