Description

The Junior House of Cathedral School is a house that has been converted into a school. It dates from the 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building features painted stucco and a hipped slate roof, along with painted stucco end stacks that have mouldings. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall with a cellar.

The exterior includes a six-window range, showcasing 12-light sash windows set in moulded architraves with pads and moulded pediments. There is a sill band with corbelled sills beneath 9-light sashes in moulded architraves, and a band with two rows of modillions beneath a moulded cornice. A flat portico supported by square columns features a modillioned cornice and contains an eight-panel door in a moulded case, topped by a raised moulded hood. This portico is flanked by 12-light sashes in moulded architraves, with additional 12-light sashes on either side, all featuring moulded shouldered architraves under pads and moulded hoods. The building also has a moulded band and sill band with chamfered quoins. The rear elevation is highlighted by a canted bay window.

Inside, there is a 19th-century open-well staircase with a moulded string and rail, barley sugar twist balusters, acorn pendants, and a margin-glazed Gothic stairwell light. A bolection moulded niche is also present. There is a remnant of an 18th-century dogleg staircase with splat balusters. On the second floor, you will find four-panel doors and a 19th-century fireplace. The first floor features cornices, an 18th-century fireplace located centre right, six-panel doors, bolection moulded architraves, and another 18th-century fireplace at the right rear, along with a moulded dado.

On the ground floor, the front left area contains an 18th-century fireplace, window shutters, and skirting. The front right area has panelling, a coved ceiling with a rose, and a fire surround with a tiled grate. The centre rear includes a cornice, ceiling rose, a 19th-century fireplace, and a moulded architrave. The hall features six-panel doors with bolection moulded architraves, a panelled dado with a rail, and a part-glazed panelled door with a fanlight set in an arched architrave. The stairwell has bolection moulded architraves with Gothic additions, four-panel and six-panel doors, and a frieze with a cornice. The cellar has flaps by G Bonner of Hereford and is stone-lined.
