Description

These are two early 19th-century houses on Castle Street. They are built of brick with hipped Welsh slate roofs and a central banded brick stack. The front elevation has three storeys and a cellar, and presents a four-window range. The windows are mostly 8/8 sashes with some crown glass, set within gauged brick flat arches; some windows are 8/4 sashes. Moulded wooden eaves run along the top. Entrances have moulded two-panel doors with fanlights, each set within a semicircular gauged brick arch. Painted stucco storeybands run across the facade. The rear elevation features 8/8 sashes under segmental arches to the first floor, and 8/4 sashes above, with an awning to the right.

Inside No.32, a dogleg staircase has stick balusters and a moulded swan neck rail. There is extensive panelling, a panelled door to the bathroom, and a C19 tiled fireplace with a wooden surround on the second floor. The second floor also features four-panel doors with architraves, a picture rail, a wood-lined arch, architraves to shelves, a late 19th-century fire surround and a half-glazed panelled door. The first floor includes four-panel doors, a ceiling cornice, panelled window risers and shutters, one C19 fireplace, alcoves, a picture rail, skirtings, and an architraved door. On the ground floor are alcoves, a ceiling cornice, a picture rail, skirtings, four-panel doors with architraves, a panelled arch, a casement fanlight over a 20th-century rear door and an architraved entrance. The cellar has plank doors, is brick-lined and features brick-arched alcoves.

No.33 has a staircase with stick balusters. The second floor possesses two fireplaces, four-panel doors, and a late 19th-century wall cupboard. The first floor has a marble fireplace, lined alcoves, a ceiling cornice, panelled window risers and shutters, four-panel doors and two-panel doors to wall cupboards. The ground floor features lined alcoves, a reset fireplace, four-panel doors with architraves, window shutters, panelled risers, a ceiling cornice and rose, a hall with a panelled arch and cornice, and a partly glazed door with overlights. The cellar is brick-lined, and contains a four-panel door, a plank door, elm stairs and a partly stone-lined section.
