Description

No. 34 Castle Street is a house dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of brick and features a Welsh slate roof with hipped gables at the rear, along with three brick stacks also located at the rear.

The exterior consists of two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a seven-window range showcasing 6/6 sash windows. There are three sash windows on the left side at the lower level, all set under flat arches with stepped keyblock details. The house has a 19th-century dentilled parapet with brick coping. The central entrance features an eight-fielded panel door within a moulded architrave, topped by a plain overlight and a moulded open pediment wood hood supported by enriched consoles. The right side of the house has a 19th-century altered roof line, which includes a 20th-century casement window in an earlier moulded frame, as well as brick modillion eaves that extend over the rear wing, which has both 6/6 and 3/3 sash windows. Spur-stones are also present.

The rear of the house has been largely rebuilt in the 20th century but retains a 19th-century two-tier bay with a tripartite arrangement of 6/6 sash windows on the ground floor, above which are 20th-century plain sashes and moulded wood eaves. Additionally, there is a 19th-century projecting bay with a tier of 6/6 sash windows under flat hoods supported by consoles, which has been restored in the 20th century.

Inside, the house features an early 19th-century dogleg staircase with a moulded string and rail, as well as turned balusters and stick balusters on the second floor. The first floor includes a panelled dado, four-panel doors, a ceiling cornice with roses, alcoves with panelled reveals, and detailed architraves and skirtings. There is a second staircase with stick balusters. The ground floor has a fireplace with a bolection moulded fire surround, four-panel doors, a ceiling cornice and rose, and shutters with panelled reveals at the windows. The cellar is partly stone-lined.
