Description

These are two early 19th-century houses on Castle Street in Hereford. They are built of brick with a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks. The houses are of double-depth plan and have a lobby-entry. The front elevation is three storeys and a cellar, with a two-window range. The original windows are 8/8 sashes set within gauged brick flat arches. Later 19th-century 4/8 sashes have been inserted to the right. Brick modillion eaves run along the top of the façade. The entrances are to the right, featuring six-panel doors with swagged fanlights, all protected by modillioned flat hoods on consoles. Painted stone quoins and a storey band further define the exterior. The left-returned side has an 8/8 sash under a gauged brick arch to the ground floor, with 6/6 and 3/6 sashes above, also under segmental arches. A part-glazed panelled door is situated to the left, again under a segmental arch and flat hood on consoles. The right-returned side has a 3/6 sash to the second floor. The rear elevation shows a 3/6 sash, a lean-to with a 6/6 sash, and a two-storey wing containing a 6/6 sash to the first floor.

Internally, No.3 has a 19th-century dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a swan-neck rail. The second floor includes a wall cupboard, three and four-panel doors with architraves, and a late 19th-century fire surround. The first floor has three six-panel doors with architraves, a panelled riser to the front window with an architrave, a late 19th-century fire surround, and a fanlight. The ground floor features a fanlight, two-panel doors (one part-glazed), architraves, wall cupboards, a mid-19th-century fire surround, and a plank door. The cellar contains two plank doors and a six-panel door. No.4 features a 19th-century staircase with stick balusters. The second floor has two 19th-century fireplaces and four-panel doors. The first floor has 19th-century fireplaces and six-panel doors. The ground floor features three plank doors, a 19th-century fireplace, a wall cupboard, and a six-panel door.
