Description

69 and 71 Millgate are two houses with attached steps and railings, built in the late 18th century and altered in the late 20th century. They are constructed of brick with stone dressings and feature a slate roof. The buildings have a plinth, a first-floor band, rebated eaves, and two gable stacks. They are two storeys tall with a basement and have a three-window range.

The central bay slightly projects and contains a round-headed recess with a round-headed glazing bar sash. On either side of this bay are taller glazing bar sashes with rubbed brick heads and half-round stone balconies with wrought iron railings. Below the central bay is a segment-headed carriage opening with a rusticated head and keystone. Flanking this opening are single reeded doorcases topped with open pediments on curved brackets. The left door is a moulded six-panel door, while the right is a late 20th-century door, both featuring overlights. To the left of the doors is a glazing bar sash with a rubbed brick head, and to the right is a late 20th-century casement window.

Outside, there is a rebuilt brick embanking wall topped with spearhead cast iron railings. Each door is accessed by curved stone steps, which have stone newels that contain scrapers.
