Description
This is an early 17th-century former presbytery, now a students' hostel, located on Parliament Street in Newark on Trent. It may incorporate an earlier building, and was altered in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings, and has steep pitched slate roofs with both hipped and gabled sections. Distinctive features include a chamfered plinth, moulded bands to the first and second floors, quoins, coped gables, single valley and single gable stacks. The main, double-gabled front facing Parliament Street has double-hung sash windows with glazing bars; some of the windows are dummies. A central early 19th-century doorcase, with a flat hood supported by fluted iron columns, leads to a 20th-century door and overlight. To the left of the door is a sash window, and to the right a 19th-century canted brick bay window with three reglazed sashes. A hipped addition to the right was built in the early 19th century with a single sash window and a blocked doorway and 20th-century casement. The rear elevation includes a single glazing bar sash on each floor, the upper window being smaller. An iron spiral staircase leads to a 6-panel door on the top floor, and a small single-story extension with a pantile roof is present below. Inside, a re-sited early 17th-century oak dogleg staircase features bulbous turned balusters, moulded handrails, panelled newels, and carved ball finials. A later, late 18th-century dogleg staircase with stick balusters and an intersecting handrail also exists. A small section of fielded panelled dado is present. An approximately 5-meter-long coped brick wall is attached to the left side of the building.
