Description

The Elmhurst Hotel, originally four houses, dates from the late 18th century and is located on Lombard Street, Newark on Trent. The building is constructed of brick with stone and stucco dressings, topped with a slate roof. Architectural features include a plinth, bands on the first and second floors, a moulded wooden eaves cornice, pediments, coped gables, and two gable and two side wall stacks. Most windows are glazing bar sashes with rubbed brick heads.

The building has a central three-storey block flanked by two-storey wings. The main five-window range features a larger, centrally placed sash window with a moulded surround. Above, five smaller windows are visible. On the ground floor, a central pilastered doorcase is topped by a segmental pediment supported by scroll brackets. The entrance door consists of two panels with glazed upper panels and an overlight. To either side of this door are two windows. The left wing has a blank central section flanked by round-headed windows; the ground floor features a mid-20th century shopfront with a recessed door and a moulded panelled entry door with a fanlight on the right. The right wing features a central sash flanked by round-headed blanks. The ground floor displays a 20th-century door and overlight, a sash window to the right, and another 20th-century entry door and overlight to the left.
