Description

Numbers 42 (Clifton House) and 44 are a pair of houses built in the early 19th century. They are constructed of red brick with some grey sandstone ashlar dressings and feature a slate roof. The buildings rise to three storeys and have a chamfered painted stone plinth, a dentil brick cornice, and a parapet with parapeted gable ends that include stone copings. There are integral brick end stacks and a central brick ridge stack.

The façade consists of nine bays with 4-pane sash windows that have painted stone cills and painted stepped stone lintels topped with raised keystones. The centre bays are blind. Doorways are located in the third and seventh bays. The left-hand door features four raised and fielded panels with centre beading, a blank radial fanlight, and a brick doorcase that includes a chamfered stone plinth, stone impost blocks, a raised triple keystone, and an open triangular pediment with a moulded wooden cornice. A curved wrought-iron handrail to the right is supported by a cast-iron columnular post. The right-hand door also has four raised and fielded panels with centre beading, a rectangular overlight, and a wooden doorcase with pilasters that support an entablature. Slate steps lead up to each door.

The interiors have been partly inspected. In No. 42, there is a dog-leg wooden staircase leading to the attic, featuring a closed string, turned balusters, a columnular intermediate newel, and an octagonal foot newel, which may be a later addition. In No. 44, the staircase rises to the attic in two single flights, with an open string, cast-iron balusters, and an octagonal wooden foot newel.
