Description
No. 17 Dodington is a house dating from the mid-18th century, possibly incorporating some earlier materials, and was remodeled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with some painted stone dressings, rendered and lined to resemble ashlar on the front. The building may include an earlier timber-framed core and features a graded slate roof.
The house has two storeys and an attic, with a plinth, chamfered quoins, a plat band, a moulded stone eaves cornice, and a parapeted gable end to the left, which has stone coping and a shaped stone kneeler. There is an integral brick end stack on the left and an external brick end stack on the right, which is shared with No. 15. The front has a pair of small 19th-century gabled eaves dormers with 2-light wooden casements.
The façade has two windows, featuring boxed glazing bar sashes with painted stone cills and rusticated lintels with raised keystones. The central door, dating from the 20th century, has six raised and fielded panels and is framed by an early 19th-century surround that includes a beaded frame, a segmental-headed overlight, an architrave, and small shaped brackets supporting a triangular-pedimented hood. The left-hand gable end has a small 2-light attic window.
The interior has not been inspected, but the owner reported in November 1986 that it contains timber-framed partition walls, likely from the 18th century or possibly earlier, as well as an 18th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters.
