Description
No. 12 Barbourne Road is a house dating from approximately 1770, constructed as part of a terrace and subject to later alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with a roof of handmade clay tiles. It has gable-end stacks at the rear and lead roofing to the box dormers. Stone sills and keystones are present at the windows, which have flat, gauged-brick arches with projecting, moulded, and capped keystones; the sills have projecting moulded top-faces. A simple rendered plinth is present, along with a cast-iron boot scraper.
The house has a double-depth plan with a central entrance and hallway, and a symmetrical facade. It is two storeys high, with cellars and attics. There are five windows on the first floor. The windows are 6/6 sashes with flush, exposed boxes. The eaves are dentilled. Two full dormers have 6-pane paired casements.
The doorcase is of a Doric style, with engaged, part-fluted columns on plinths, a frieze, and a cornice. The door is five-panelled, with raised and fielded upper panels, a flush-beaded bottom panel featuring an inscribed elliptical motif, panelled reveals, and an overlight with a lozenge-and-square glazing bar pattern. A floor-mounted boot scraper is located to the right of the door.
The interior was not inspected. The building shares similarities with Nos. 14 and 16 Barbourne Road.
