Description
This is a pair of houses located at 18 and 20 Barbourne Road, dating to approximately 1800 with later additions and alterations. The houses are part of a terrace and were later used as flats. They are constructed of red brick, with a hipped slate roof to the left-hand house and a plain clay tile roof to the right-hand house. The left-hand house has a chimney stack with oversailing details, brick string courses in contrasting blue and yellow brick, lead roofs, and box dormers with side cheeks. Painted stone sills and stone steps are present, along with timber door cases. The buildings have a double-depth plan, with adjacent entrances and hallways.
The facade is asymmetrical, with the left-hand house being three stories high and the right-hand house two stories with attics, both with cellars. There are four first-floor windows. A plat band separates the ground and first-floor windows. Yellow brick eaves courses are visible on the left, while the right-hand house has dentilled eaves. The windows are predominantly 1/1 sashes on the left-hand side and 6/6 sashes on the right, set in plain reveals with segmental brick arches and sills. The right-hand house has two full dormers with 3-pane paired casements.
The doorcases are in a Doric style, featuring engaged part-fluted columns on plinths, a fluted frieze with carved rosettes at each end and a leaf motif in the center, and a cornice. There are two steps leading to each entrance. The left-hand door is six-panel, raised and fielded, with matching panelled reveals and a radial fanlight with segmental margin glazing. The right-hand entrance is similar, but the door is five-panel; the bottom pair of panels are flush-double-beaded, while the rest are raised and fielded. A fire-insurance plaque is located on the front elevation of the left-hand house. The return elevation of the left-hand house includes a pair of canted bays with 6/6:8/8:6/6 sashes. Further 6/6 sashes are present. The interior of the property was not inspected.
