Description
No. 21 Minster Yard is a house dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century and division occurring in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick, featuring stone and stucco dressings, and has a plain tile roof with a single gable and ridge stacks.
The exterior includes a chamfered plinth, rendered angle pilasters, first floor and eaves bands, and a coped parapet with a gable. The building is two storeys plus attics and has four bays. The windows are topped with brick flat arches that have keystones. The entrance features an off-centre moulded wooden doorcase with a six-panel door and an overlight. To the left of the door is a single glazing bar sash, and to the right are two similar sashes. Above the door, there are four similar sashes, and above that, three segment-headed dormers with two-light casements.
Inside, there is a central entrance hall with fielded panelled wainscot. The mid-18th century dogleg stair has four flights, cut string, turned newels, a ramped and scrolled handrail, and three vase and stem balusters per tread. There is also a service stair with a turned newel and stick balusters. Three rooms feature fielded six-panel doors, and three others have similar two-panel doors. The room on the right side of the ground floor has full-height panelling from the 18th century, complete with a moulded cornice and overmantel. The corresponding room on the first floor also has a moulded cornice and two walls with full-height 18th-century panelling. Both of these rooms are equipped with painted slate fireplaces from the 19th century.
