Description
No. 20 Minster Yard is a house that has been converted into four flats. It dates from the mid-18th century and was refronted in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone and stucco dressings, topped with a plain tile roof featuring a cruciform ridge stack and a single gable stack.
The exterior includes a chamfered plinth, an eaves cornice, a coped parapet, and a single coped gable. The symmetrical front has three bays, with a wooden doorcase that features pilasters and a cornice, a six-panel door, and a fanlight above. There is a glazing bar sash with a pilaster surround above the door. On either side of the entrance are bow windows, two storeys high, each with three glazing bar sashes on both floors. The single bay to the right has a central glazing bar sash on each floor and a segment-headed close boarded door to the right. Above, there are three segment-headed dormers with two-light casements.
Inside, the property features a central five-flight dogleg stair with a cut string, turned newels, a ramped and scrolled handrail, and three vase and stem balusters per tread. The walls have a fielded panelled dado. There is an early 19th-century service stair with winders and stick balusters, as well as a winder stair leading to the attic. Most doors are six fielded panels, and there are several 18th-century two-panel cupboard doors. The right ground floor room has an early 19th-century marble fireplace with pilasters and paterae, along with a moulded cornice. The corresponding first-floor room features a similar cornice and fireplace. The roof has single purlins with collars.
