Description
No. 2 Exchequergate is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It incorporates a late 15th-century timber-framed partition and a stone wall on the south side. The building dates from the late 15th century but was rebuilt between 1834 and 1848. It features brick and coursed rubble construction with a stucco front, and has gabled and hipped roofs covered in slate and pantiles, topped with a gable stack. The structure has a plinth and a first-floor band, and it is three storeys high with two bays, forming an L-plan.
On the left side, there is a mid-19th-century wooden shopfront that has been renewed, featuring a central doorway flanked by single windows, all beneath a fascia and cornice. Further left, there is a 20th-century half-glazed door. On the right, a 19th-century shop window is flanked by single doorways with keystones, one of which has been altered to serve as a showcase. Above the shopfront, there are two canted wooden oriel windows with plain sashes, and above those, three plain sashes.
Inside, the building has a close-studded partition wall with an arch brace supporting the end post. It also features a late 15th-century moulded wall plate and spine beam. This building contains important remnants of a range of shop units that were part of the south side of the Exchequergate barbican during medieval times.
