Description

No. 1 Castle Hill is a house, now used as offices, dating from the mid 18th century and converted in the mid and late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, with the ground floor painted, and features stucco dressings. It has a hipped and gabled plain tile roof with a single gable and ridge stacks.

The exterior includes a ground floor lintel band, splayed lintels with keystones, moulded eaves, a cornice with dentillation on the east side, a coped parapet, and a gable. The building has three storeys plus attics and is three bays wide. The north front features a renewed central wooden doorcase with a cornice and overlight, along with a 20th-century six-panel door. This is flanked by shallow square bay windows topped with cornices and triple sashes. Above the door, there is a central round-headed glazing bar sash flanked by single Venetian windows, and above that, three glazing bar sashes. The roof has a single segment-arched dormer with a two-light sliding sash.

On the left return facing Steep Hill, there is a six-panel door with a fanlight to the left, and a glazing bar sash to the right, both with round heads. Above, to the left, is a square wooden oriel window from the 19th century with a triple sash, and to its right is another glazing bar sash. Above these, there are two segment-headed glazing bar sashes.

The interior features a central stairwell with a six-flight wooden dogleg stair that has a cut string, three stick balusters per tread, and a ramped scrolled handrail. At the foot of the stairs, there is a four-panel door and a cupboard, possibly incorporating original panelling. The ground floor front rooms have panelled shutters, and the right room includes two elliptical arched recesses with fluted keystones. Renewed six-panel doors are present throughout, set in original moulded surrounds.
