Description
32 Steep Hill is a house that now functions as both a residence and a shop. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone alterations in the early and mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick, which is painted and partly rendered, and features a plain tile roof with a gable stack. Notable exterior elements include a rendered plinth, a first-floor band, a moulded wood eaves cornice, and brick coped gables.
The structure has two storeys plus attics and consists of two bays. The full-width shopfront, which is an early 19th-century addition, includes an enriched frieze. There is a central blocked doorway with a pilaster surround that has been converted into a window, flanked by single tripartite sash windows. To the right, there is a moulded doorcase with a dummy fanlight and a half-glazed panelled door. Above this, to the left, is a square wooden oriel window from the late 19th century, complete with a cornice, and to the right is a plain sash window. The upper section features a box dormer with a 20th-century casement.
Inside, there is a room that showcases full-height fielded panelling and a cornice, along with a plain spine beam. The early 19th-century staircase is notable for its stick balusters.
