Description
34 Steep Hill is a house that now functions as a house and gallery. It dates from around 1500 and was refronted in the early and mid-19th century. The building features timber framing and brick, which is colourwashed, with a hipped pantile roof and a rendered plinth. It has a bracketed wooden gutter and stands three storeys tall with a single bay.
The full-width wooden shopfront, dating from the early 19th century, is in a Classical style and includes pilasters and a dentilled cornice. To the right of the shopfront is a half-glazed panelled door set in a panelled recess, while to the left is a six-pane shop window. Above the shopfront, there is a segment-headed glazing bar sash, flanked by a 19th-century lamp bracket and a 20th-century shop sign. Above this is a smaller segment-headed glazing bar sash.
Inside, the building retains substantial remains of timber framing, with bay posts and close-studded walls on all floors, as well as arch braces on the upper floors. The ground floor features a stone north wall, and there is further timber framing in the rear extension. The first-floor front room contains remnants of wall painting from around 1600.
