Description
Cherwell House is a house, dating to around 1800, and later divided. It is located in Whitchurch Urban, Dodington. The house is constructed of red brick with a hipped roof covered in slate. It has a layout in the shape of an "L". The building stands three storeys high. The lower level has a painted chamfered sandstone ashlar plinth, with a painted stone band at the level of the first floor windows. A deep eaves cornice featuring decorative brackets is prominent. A central, one-bay triangular pediment sits above the main facade. At the rear, there is a dentil brick cornice. The house has integral brick chimney stacks, with an additional external brick stack at the rear on the left. It has three bays, with a central break in the facade. The windows are 16-pane sash windows, with painted stone sills and brick arches above. The central entrance has a four-panelled door with a beaded centre panel, a five-part rectangular overlight, and a doorcase consisting of a moulded architrave and large consoles supporting a cornice. The front is enclosed by wrought-iron railings, which were replaced in the 20th century. The interior has not been inspected. A short brick wall with a doorway connects the house to the former service block to the right, which is now number 27, Dodington.
