Description

Hill View Cottage, Old Well Cottage, and Rose Cottage are four houses located on Tunstead Lane in Saddleworth. The deeds for Rose Cottage are said to date from 1687, and there is a datestone in No. 1 Rose Cottage from 1692, but most of the buildings date from the mid to late 18th century. They are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a graduated stone slate roof. The buildings consist of two ranges built at different times, featuring single and double depths and two storeys.

Rose Cottage and No. 1 (formerly one house) have a central door. To the right, there is a 4-light double-chamfered window and surrounding stonework that dates back to the 17th century, along with a similar window at the rear. The left side features a later 4-light window and a 13-light workshop window with recessed flat-faced stone mullions. The buildings have gable stacks and a lean-to at the rear. Hill View Cottage occupies the external angle between the two ranges and has a 4-light double-chamfered mullion window on each floor, quoins, a 20th-century porch, and a pebble-dashed gable. In the north range, another part of Rose Cottage (formerly a separate house) has a blocked doorway, quoins, and two 2-light windows. Old Well Cottage, dating from the mid-18th century, features 5 and 4-light recessed cavetto-moulded chamfered stone mullion windows and a gable entrance.
