Description

Fur Lane House is a house and loom workshop located on the north side of Fur Lane in Saddleworth. It features the inscriptions "GM1715" and "Giles Shaw Hannah Shaw 1750" on the stone and door lintel. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and has a graduated stone slate roof. Originally built as a two-bay single-depth house in 1715, it was extended to the right and heightened in 1750, forming an L-shape. In the 19th century, the angle was filled in, and a 20th-century connecting passage was added to provide access to a formerly detached loom workshop and coachhouse.

The four-bay, two-storey elevation includes stone quoins, a door in the third bay with an ovolo-moulded surround, a dated lintel, and a cornice, along with an arched side window. The ground floor features three, eight, and four-light windows, while the first floor has three, four, two, and four-light windows, all with double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullions. The building has coped gables with kneelers, shaped eaves gutter brackets, and two ridge chimney stacks. There is also a patio window on the left gable. The loom workshop consists of two storeys, with a coachhouse on the ground floor and a nine-light workshop window with leaded panes on the first floor.
