Description
Building 23 at Cromford Mill is a former loom shop dating to around 1785, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of millstone grit with tiled and slate roof coverings. The building has a linear plan, oriented roughly southwest to northeast.
The main facade, facing south into the west yard, features six bays with a timber entrance door in the second bay, set beneath a large stone lintel. It is three stories high, with end stacks. The first and second floors have a symmetrical arrangement of windows, each with a stone mullion and a 20th-century four-light casement. The east end of the building has a blocked doorway on the first floor, suggesting a former bridge connection. The ground floor has taller openings, each containing a six-light casement. The west elevation contains a large ground floor opening, with two stone mullions above on the second floor, a feature reflected in the east gable end. The rear (north) elevation includes additional entrances, two at ground floor level (one blocked), and one at first floor, accessed by a 20th-century external staircase. Six further window openings are on the second floor, one of which is blocked.
Inside, a staircase is located at the north end of the building. The top floor is an open textile workshop space, displaying visible timber roof trusses.
