Description
Cromford War Memorial is located in a Garden of Remembrance to the south of the junction of Market Place and Derby Road, near Willersley Castle and within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The memorial features a canopied Crucifixion on an octagonal shaft, which sits atop a rectangular pedestal on a three-stepped base. The cross head, shaft, and pedestal are made from Stancliffe stone, while the base is constructed of limestone and is surrounded by a square paved area.
The main dedicatory inscription is in raised lettering on a bronze plaque on the front of the pedestal, stating: "IN IMPERISHABLE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CROMFORD WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919. 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.'" The names of those who served in the First World War are listed on bronze plaques on the left and right sides of the pedestal. Additionally, a rectangular bronze plaque on the front of the upper step commemorates 10 names from the Second World War, reading "1939 1945."
