Description

Building 19 at Cromford Mill is a late 18th century residential building that was extended in the later 18th century and restored in the late 20th century.

The structure is made of red brick and features a slate twin-gable roof, with stone cills, headers, and corbels. It is a rectangular double-piled house consisting of two blocks and is oriented roughly west to east.

The exterior is two storeys high with regular window openings. On the main frontage, or south elevation, there are ten eight-over-eight single glazed sliding sash windows, each with stone cills and voussoirs above that form a flat arch. Evidence of substantial rebuilding in the 1980s can be seen in the brickwork, suggesting the building was re-fronted. The west elevation includes a projecting range at the north end and visible Queen Closer bricks, along with two windows featuring casements in a sash style. The rear elevation, or north side, has two pedestrian doorways on the ground floor, three ground floor windows, and two first floor windows of varying sizes, all with stone voussoirs, including those above the doorways. The east side elevation has two ground floor windows that match those on the south and west elevations, but with simple headers instead of fanned ones. A central brick chimney stack is also present.

Inside, the building has been entirely restored, featuring three rooms on both the ground and first floors. Replacement 19th century fireplaces are present on both floors. A plaque commemorating the restoration of the building is affixed to an exposed beam in the main room on the first floor, dated November 4, 1985.
