Description
10 and 12 Grove Street is a pair of houses, which includes a former loomshop, dated 1808. They are built from coursed and squared sandstone, with a watershot finish to the sides and rear, and feature a heavy slate roof. The buildings are two storeys tall, with No. 10 having a cellar. The façade has a two-window range, consisting of two single unit, double pile plans. There are angle quoins on the left side, and on the right side, the springing of an elliptical archway connects Nos. 10 and 8. The round arched doorways have plain architraves with keystones, and the windows have all been renewed in their original openings, featuring flat arched heads. Notably, there is a 5-light window with plain mullions in the former cellar loomshop of No. 10. A moulded plaque between the upper windows displays the date and initials 'H' over 'T.A.'. The rear fenestration has largely been renewed, and there is an axial stack set forward of the ridge-line. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the former cellar loomshop, which has been converted to part of the domestic accommodation, is believed to have been built and used by a velvet weaver, as Grove Street was formerly known as Velvet Walks.
