Description

A group of cottages, largely dating from the mid-18th century to early 19th century, with a datestone inscribed "1642" although the fabric is considerably later. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone, partly watershot, with a graduated stone slate roof. It is a large, T-shaped building incorporating former loom workshops and a barn. The west range, forming the head of the ‘T’, is four storeys high, three bays wide, and has undergone extensions and alterations. It features windows of varying size, including 3, 4, and 7-light recessed chamfered cavetto moulded mullions, and 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows. The east range, the stem of the ‘T’, is three storeys high, single-depth, and four bays long, with 2, 3, 4, 6, and 10-light recessed flat-faced mullion windows, opposed cart entrances with segmental keystone arches, and an owl hole within the gable. A cantilevered stone staircase rises within the angle of the ‘T’ to provide access to the former loom shops on the second floors of both ranges. A 20th-century porch has been added to No. 5. The building includes shaped eaves gutter brackets and ridge chimney stacks with cornices.
