Foul Rake House

SADDLEWORTH KINDER'S LANE SD 90 SE (north-west side) 5/176 Foul Rake House 19/6/67 - II House. "JA MA 1746" (John and Mary Andrew) on door lintel with later alterations and additions. Watershot hammer- dressed stone with graduated stone slate roof. Originally a 3-bay 2-storey single-depth house connected to a barn at the right which had a wing at front creating an L-shape. A similar wing was added to the left and the space between filled in in late C18. Wings to left and right have quoins, gables and ball finials; the right a blocked doorway and the left two 2-light chamfered mullion windows and a C20 window. The infill between the wings has 3 bays, a blocked door to right with ovolo-moulded surround, a central panelled door with pilasters, tripartite keystone and decorative fanlight flanked by 2-light chamfered mullion windows. 3 similar windows on first floor (one mullion missing) and a dentilled eaves cornice. The rear has 3 and 7-light double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullion windows and a C20 window on the ground floor and 3, 4 and 4-light chamfered windows on the first. The finely carved 1746 datestone with fleur-de-lys is now on an internal wall. Bulletin of the Saddleworth Historical Society, Vol.3, No.3, 1973.
