Description

Foul Rake House is a Grade II listed house located on Kinder's Lane in Saddleworth. The house features the inscription "JA MA 1746" (for John and Mary Andrew) on its door lintel, indicating its date of construction, although it has undergone later alterations and additions. It is built from watershot hammer-dressed stone and has a graduated stone slate roof. Originally, it was a three-bay, two-storey house with a single depth, connected to a barn on the right that had a front wing, creating an L-shape. In the late 18th century, a similar wing was added to the left, and the space between the wings was filled in.

The wings on both sides have quoins, gables, and ball finials. The right wing features a blocked doorway, while the left has two two-light chamfered mullion windows and a 20th-century window. The infill between the wings consists of three bays, with a blocked door on the right that has an ovolo-moulded surround, a central panelled door with pilasters, a tripartite keystone, and a decorative fanlight, flanked by two-light chamfered mullion windows. The first floor has three similar windows, one of which is missing a mullion, and there is a dentilled eaves cornice.

At the rear, there are three and seven-light double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullion windows, along with a 20th-century window on the ground floor, and three, four, and four-light chamfered windows on the first floor. The finely carved datestone from 1746, featuring a fleur-de-lys, is now located on an internal wall.
